Hi All!
We often assume that the plasma concentration of drug is a true
representative of the amount of drug in blood. So when recently
someone told me that there is a difference in the blood flow rate and
the plasma flow rate I was kind of perplexed. Is there a difference
in the blood flow rate and the plasma flow rate? If there is how does
we deal with it?

In my opinion it depends on how the drug accumulates in the red
cells. if the drug accumulates in the red blood cells (RBC), the cell
could be a reservoir, so in that case you have to add one compartment
in your kinetic modeling. There are other case where the drug remains
in the red cell (oxaliplatin for example) and is not bio available
anymore the terminal half life of the drug is the half life of the
RBC. In many cases there are no interaction between the cells and the
drug, the plasma concentration and the blood concentration are
comparable.

Is there any reason that you only mentioned drug
accumulation in the red cells and not other cells in
the blood?
