Could anyone give me informations about blood removal techniques from rat
heart?

It's best to have rat anesthetized.
Place rat on his back
Hold syringe and needle parallel to rat, just below sternum (in a
horizontal position)
Cup chest between thumb and forefinger, feel for heartbeat
Insert needle into left side of chest under rib cage, toward your
thumb or forefinger
You can redirect without pulling the needle completely out, if you
didn't hit the heart on first try
You can also:
Lay rat on his right side
Cup chest between thumb and forefinger feeling for heartbeat
Hold syringe and needle vertical to the rat
Insert between the rib cage
You can redirect without pulling the needle completely out, if you
didn't hit the heart right away
Hope this helps!

Karen

Hi - Just a note regarding the intracardiac blood removal techniques in
rats. You will need your Animal Care and Use Committee's approval of the
technique that you chose. This may be an important consideration; be sure
to get their feedback.

You will get very elevated biomarkers of stress and elevations in both
cardiac and skeletal muscle damage. If your sampling is to get something
right than do it right. cannulation then recovery to within 10% of
presurgery then test....!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Alain,
One suggestion. Usually the intracardiac blood removal is only used for one
time in a rat. For example:
- to do a total removal blood in order to obtain blank rat serum
or plasma.
- to obtain a sample in a pharmacokinetic study, using one rat
per sampling time.
So, after the intracardiac punction you should put to sleep the rat
according to ethical criteria. If you want to use it as a blood sampling
way (using one rat for more than one sampling time), I suggest that you
choose another removal technique because the intracardiac blood removal
could provoke some internal injuries that we can't see.
Good luck!!!
