I am trying to select values appropriate for small intestinal water
volumes of preclinical species and was interested in values for gut
water volume derived by Harold. On inspection of the Davies and
Morris article I notice there may have been some transcription
errors. Three of the values reported were mistakenly entered using
gut blood flows rather than gut volumes. What I believe are the
correct values I've shown in the table below. The same extrapolation
procedure as used by Harold was applied estimate gut water volume =
[(500/1650)*GutVolume]. One reference leads me to believe that the
intestinal water volume in rats is probably does not exceed 4 mL
(Hoffman, DenBleyker, Smith, & Stricker, AJP-Regul Integr Comp
Physiol v290 May 2006 R1199-R1207) and 250 mL is generally assumed
for human (Curatolo, PSTT, v1, 1998, p.387). If anyone else has
references for gut/small intestine water volume in preclinical
species I would find this very valuable. Thanks, Sam
