Hello group,
I was just wondering if anyone would have any references regarding
repeated IP injections in a single day in mice. Specifically, what is
the maximum number of IP injections per day that is recommended? Does
anyone know of any guidance on this?
Thanks,
Alene

Here is one reference you may find helpful with regards to IP injection volumes. One must
also consider the composition of the injection and its osmotic effects on blood volume in
the mouse if you are determining PK and exposure.:
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Vol. 130, No. 2, Aug., 1974 page 209
http://www.jstor.org/stable/i30106986
Here is another reference:
weight (g) and volume to be administered in 1 injection(mL)
Mouse <10 0.25
10-15 0.5
15-20 1.0
>20 1.5

Hi Sanjeev,
Thank you for your reply. I was actually more wondering about number
of injections, rather than injection volume. I'm trying to find some
guidance on how many IP injection can be done in a day without causing
excessive stress to the mice.
Thanks,
Alene

Alene,
Unfortunately I don't have a reference, but I've done 4 to 6 injections
within a 24 h period without much difficulty. Any more than that and
you may want to consider an osmotic pump implant.

I worked with an ip catheter in mice and rats with that it was unlimited!

IACUC guidelines for the institution that you are working with with usually will have
guidances, but 4 is about as many as I would go in an alternating left and right manner.
Also keeping the needle to a 28g butterfly works better.
