Papers from the 1960s conclude that probenecid alters the volume of
distribution of certain drugs. I have been unable to find recent
publications that document that probenecid alters the volume of distribution
of drugs that have been concomitantly administered with probenecid. Apart
from the classic renal tubular secretion interaction of probenecid with the
renal clearance of other drugs, can probenecid interact by altering the
volumes of distribution of other drugs? Or is this an error in older papers
where volume of distribution was calculated using elimination rate constants
that were influenced by changes in plasma clearance ?
Your comments would be appreciated.
