Dear Colleagues,
What is the Maximum volume to be administered intravenously into mice (20g)
and at what frequency.
Thanks

Typically a mouse is dosed i.v. at an injectate volume of 10 mL/kg
(i.e. for a 20g mouse that is equivalent to 0.2 mL; for a 30g mouse it
would be 0.3 mL; and so forth). I have also dosed at 20 mL/kg i.v.
(i.e. 0. mL for a 20 g mouse) when a desired high dose was not
obtainable due to solubility limitations of a compound. Dosing four to
five times/ day at 10 mL/kg can be done, but I have not done this for
more than two days.
Please note that for a 20 g mouse the blood volume is approximely 1.6
mls so one must be aware that multiple injections can dilute the blood
and any concentrations of drugs within it. Also one must use an
appropriate vehicle, even sterile H2O at 10 mL/kg can cause some mild
hemolysis.
Hope this helps.
