Dear Vishwanath!
In our lab we use a non sterile Polythene Tubing with an inner=20
diameter of 0.4mm
and an outer diameter of 0.80mm for rat bile duct cannulation. For example:
Portex (UK), REF 800/110/140. The tube is distributed by the Lab=20
division of our
company MERCK. The following adress may be helpful for you:

We are working on the preclinical PK studies for many compounds and doing
the bile duct canulation routinely. We normally use the PE10 tube for the
canulation.

Marco:
We've cannulated the bile duct with a shunt which allows the bile to
continue flowing into the gut without interruption, while we monitor the
chemistry of the bile via a dialysis membrane installated in the shunt. A
quick reference to this can be found in a past issue of the journal Current
Separations (www.currentseparations.com) at:
http://www.currentseparations.com/issues/17-2/cs17-2d.pdf
The advantage of this technique is that the rat is freely-moving, and that
you conserve the bile since you are dialyzing it but not actually removing
any of it. But, the disadvantage is that with dialysis you won't recover
100% of the analyte so if you are looking for total excretion, it may not
serve your needs. If you'd like more information, I'll send some of our
reprints on this topic.
