RE: P-Pharm question:
We have recently acquired P-Pharm and are wanting to use the programme to
model some pharmacokinetic data in children. All our data are currently
entered in a NONMEM format in EXCEL spreadsheets (Windows 95). We
currently only have access to a Microsoft Access database. What would be
your advice as to the best way to import the data into P-Pharm (through
EXCEL? cut and paste?)
Thank you in advance,

Dear Sivan,
About your problem for transfering data from Excel into P-Pharm :
P-Pharm uses its very own structure for data files, and the software
manufacturer apparently assumes that you enter your data through his
program. However, a tool called "Pharm Data" is distributed along with
P-Pharm, and can be used to transfer data from Excel into P-Pharm.
The steps are as follows :
1. Open your datasheet in Excel
2. Add columns and order the data so that you get the appropriate table
structure described in the "Pharm Data" manual (Sub#, Ident, Dose,
Inf.Time, Per.Dur, Route, Trt., Rnd., Drug, Unit, Lab., Smp., X, Y, Flag)
3. If you use covariates, add the corresponding colums at the right end of
the table.
4. Take care to fill the datasheet as shown on the examples of the manual
(i.e. many cells are left empty); correctly coding the route etc. is of
prime importance.
5. Open "Pharm Data". Double-click on the sheet to modify the validity
ranges and other parameters of your data. Use the "insert covariates"
button to insert covariate columns on the left end of the sheet.
6. Copy from Excel and paste into "Pharm Data". You may have to repeat the
operation until it is error-free. Keep cool.
7. From "Pharm Data", save your work in XPD format; this is the text format
ready to be opened into P-Pharm. If necessary, you can edit this file with
the Windows "Notepad" text processor.
I have tried this method several times with success; however, depending on
your data structure, it may be tricky to get the appropriate which will
work for P-Pharm. Good luck

Thanks for your email about getting you data into P-Pharm. The best way is
to use the Pharm-Data option. This is "like" a spreadsheet that you can
load you data into and it will then be converted into P-Pharm format when
you save it.
The fundamental set up of the data set is different to NONMEM and you might
like to have a look at this in the manual. Remember to put in no "0"'s -
P-Pharm will dump with a floating point error if it is using 1/y2 model and
it finds a "0".
Good luck and let me know if you need more specific advance

Hi Sivan
You should also have a programme called "sprx.exe" or "sprxnew.exe" that
came with P-Pharm. This can be used for cutting and pasting from
spreadsheets into a readable format for P-Pharm. Sprx allows you to view
all the data at once, rather than subject by subject which makes it
amenable to cutting and pasting for large amounts of subjects and data. I
like to input one subject with covariates etc. in P-Pharm itself and then
open the file in sprx.exe and follow the format of that initial subject
when you cut and paste from Excel. I find saves a lot of time as P-Pharm
data entry from a spreadsheet is extremely tedious otherwise.
Cheers

Best way to make the data base for PPHARM is through Excel.
Make a separate sheet in Excel in the format similar to PPHARM
data sheet. Then copy the whole thing into PPHARM. Please
make sure not to close the PPHARM data sheet before you are
sure that the the program identifies the data sheet properly (run a
calculation).
Good Luck
