Dear all,
when using spline-like functions / GAM I do not see the possibility to
extrapolate. Accordingly, such procedures seem to have the only purpose of
fitting the available data and maybe detecting some more regular pattern to be
fitted using a parametric model / a model relying on some order statistics? Is
that correct?

Hello,
You are right. Most times, spline-like functions are used to explore
trends in the data, which is followed by parametric modeling preferably
based on mechanistic reasoning.
