I am part of a professional medical group looking to develop
guidelines for "Off-label prescribing". Does anyone know if such
guidelines exist anywhere?
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks,
Noel Cranswick

Hi
Usually they exist for psychotropic medications in a typical state hospital
system.
Every state hospital writes protocols for off label uses of psychotropic
medications for
their own organization and get it approved by P & T Committee and Medical
Executive Committee.

At one time the AMA Drug Evaluations compiled "off lable" uses of
drugs. They sold their database to the USP organization who included
off label uses in the USP DI monographs. The USP has recently
transferred their database to Micromedex Corp.
Here is a URL that discusses the situation:
http://www.usp.org/frameset.htm?http://www.usp.org/standard/9907/9907_04.htm
The article states that USP will continue to collect off lable uses and
contribute them to the data base as "value added" information.
Check with the USP.
