Prothrombin times are often reported as International Normalized ratio
(INR) where INR is the ratio of the patient prothrombin time to the
control prothrombin time, raised to the power of the International
Sensitivity Index (ISI). The ISI is the index of the reference
thromboplastin used for the test compared to the WHO reference reagent.
Can anyone give me a reference for the above?
With thanks,
Aideen Young, Ph.D.

Dear Aideen
Concept of ISI adopted by WHO in 1982.

Hi Aideen,
Here are a couple of landmark reports on derivation of INR by Poller.
Hope this helps!
Thomson JM. Tomenson JA. Poller L. The calibration of the second
primary international reference preparation for thromboplastin
(thromboplastin, human, plain, coded BCT/253). Thrombosis &
Haemostasis. 52(3):336-42, 1984 Dec 29.

of International Normalized Ratios for the reporting of
prothrombin time results with North American thromboplastin reagents.

Here's a reference you can try:

The history of standardization of the PT has been extensively reviewed
by Pller and by Kirkwood. I suggest the folowing artilces:
1. Poller L. Progress in standerdization in anticoagulant control.
Hematol Rev 1987;1:225-41
2. Kirkwood TBL. Calibration of reference thromboplastins and
standerdization of the prothrombin time ratio. Thromb Haemost
1983;49:238-44
I would also recommend to look at "the Fourth ACCP (American College of
Chest Physicians) Consenus Conference on Antithrombotic Therapy
published in the Chest, vol 108, number 4. 1995"
Hope this help
